"Monique
Walker's passion for the mysterious underwater world is contagious.
The
author succeeds in kindling our interest in those marine creatures
which live in the murky depths and goes on to document her
encounters with these strange "critters", as she
calls them. First, she photographed repugnant yet fascinating
fish in the shallow waters of tropical seas. Strange indeed
is this aspect of our planet with its marine life. The book
gives us some idea
of what deep-sea research and exploration into underwater
caverns could bring to light one day. Walker presents us with
outstanding portraits of giant squids, ghost snake eels, seapen
crab, pink fairy lobster and sexy shrimp."

"Coffee-table
books full of outstanding underwater photographs appear at
relatively infrequent intervals, largely because of the cost
of publication and therefore the cover price.
Critters, by Swiss-born, Germany-based Monique Walker, is
no exception when it comes to price, but two things distinguish
Critters from most other books of its kind.
The first is that many of the pictures are shot, not in the
crystal-clear waters of coral reefs but in seas with poorer
visibility - over seagrass beds, sandy and even muddy bottoms.
A growing number of photographers have discovered that some
remarkable and little-known marine animals are to be found,
often well-camouflaged, in such habitats, and Walker has a
talent for finding and capturing them on film.
The beautiful images that result are enhanced by the second
difference between this and other such books, which is the
imaginative and attractive design of each spread, sometimes
focusing on body parts as well as the creatures as a whole."

"Pick
yourself up off the floor!
Yes,
that is an awful lot of cash to be laying out for a coffee-table
book, but Critters is no ordinary, run-of-the-mill collection
of underwater photographs. Oh no, Monique Walker has managed
to capture some truly exquisite marcro shots the likes of
which I have never seen before. How she manages to get such
pin-sharp U/W photos is beyond me, and Critters profiles some
of her best shots in all their colourful glory. Monique took
up diving in 1981 and started underwater photography in 1986.
Her first book received great acclaim, and this second book
looks set to send her reputation into the stratosphere."
